Hailee Steinfeld Debuts “Love Myself,” an Ode to Masturbation?

Hailee Steinfeld, the actress from True Grit, Ender’s Game, Romeo and Juliet and Pitch Perfect 2, is branching out into the world of professional music and has released a debut music video, “Love Myself.” The song is catchy, sung well, and best of all, Steinfeld’s song appears to be about masturbation.

Now there are some naysayers out there who insist that Steinfeld’s debut song “Love Myself” is only about positive self-esteem, self-confidence and self-love, but with lyrics like, “Pictures in my mind on replay / I’m gonna touch the pain away / I know how to scream my own name” and “I’m gonna put my body first / And love me so hard ’til it hurts / I know how to scream out the words” and the fact that Steinfeld wears a leotard in her music video that says “self service,” it’s hard to believe that the song isn’t about masturbation. Either way, though, the song is a win-win with a positive message so check out the song for yourself and see what you think. Is “Love Myself” a good old sex positive ode to masturbation or is it about independence and self-love?
