Tolu Obiwole performed “According to My Upbringing” at the 2014 Brave New Voices final, and in her slam poem, Obiwole listed off the things that girls should and should not be and do according to society and how this can result in confusion and conflict for girls. And as you can guess, her list included such things as having a voice, opinions and self-worth. And as to what you might not expect was on her list, well, as Obiwole pointed out, everything under the sun and moon is scared shitless of little girls and what they are capable of and can be.
