In 2015, the world was shocked to hear that three East London schoolgirls, Amira Abase, Shamima Begum, and Kadiza Sultana, had run off to Syria to join the Islamic State. It was hard for many to understand how and why these girls had seemingly voluntarily joined the Islamic State and it was no easier for the girls’ families to understand. The following video from VICE News explains what exactly happened to these girls; it exposes how the police had been investigating Abase, Begum and Sultana but had failed to notify their parents; and it examines and documents the devastating consequences for those the girls have left behind.
